Topics covered
Unit 1 — Chemical Substances (20 marks): chemical reactions and equations (types — combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement, precipitation, neutralization, oxidation and reduction); acids, bases, and salts (definitions based on H⁺/OH⁻ ions, pH scale, everyday uses of sodium hydroxide, bleaching powder, baking soda, washing soda, Plaster of Paris); metals and non-metals (properties, ionic compounds, reactivity series, metallurgy basics, corrosion and its prevention); carbon and its compounds (covalent bonding, homologous series, nomenclature, saturated vs unsaturated hydrocarbons, chemical properties, ethanol and ethanoic acid, soaps and detergents).
Unit 2 — The Living World (20 marks): life processes (nutrition, respiration, transport, excretion in plants and animals); control and coordination (plant hormones, nervous system, reflex action, animal hormones); how organisms reproduce (sexual and asexual reproduction, reproductive health, family planning, safe sex and HIV/AIDS); heredity (Mendel’s contribution, laws of inheritance, sex determination).
Unit 3 — Natural Phenomena (12 marks): reflection and refraction of light, image formation by spherical mirrors and lenses, mirror/lens formulas, magnification; the human eye and defects of vision; dispersion and scattering of light.
Unit 4 — Effects of Electric Current (13 marks): electric current, potential difference, Ohm’s law, resistance and resistivity, series/parallel combinations, heating effect of current, electric power, relationship between P, V, I, R; magnetic effects of electric current (magnetic field, force on a current-carrying conductor, Fleming’s left-hand rule, domestic electric circuits, right-hand thumb rule).
Unit 5 — Natural Resources (5 marks): our environment, ecosystems, environmental problems, ozone layer depletion, waste management, biodegradable and non-biodegradable substances.
Practical exam (30 marks)
Split between an external examiner (15 marks) and an internal examiner (15 marks):
External (15 marks): three experiments — one each from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (4 marks each), plus a viva voce (3 marks).
Internal (15 marks): project work — one project each from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (9 marks total), plus term work (6 marks).
The practical syllabus lists specific experiments (pH testing of common substances, chemical reaction classification, metal reactivity comparison, resistance and Ohm’s law verification, stomata slide preparation, focal length of mirrors/lenses, prism light path tracing, and more), and a list of suggested project topics (chemical garden, electric bell model, kaleidoscope model, heart structure model, seed germination study, air pollution and CNG, plastic pollution, noise pollution, and biographies of scientists including Madame Curie and notable Indian scientists).
