Marks distribution

Total: 100 marks, one single exam paper (no separate internal assessment marks — remedial unit tests are held but not counted toward the final result).

Exam pattern

Unit 1 — Reading (15 marks): one long unseen passage followed by four very short answer questions (12 marks) and three vocabulary-based questions (3 marks).

Unit 2 — Writing (20 marks): an article — descriptive, argumentative, or autobiographical — in about 150 words (10 marks); a letter to the editor, complaint letter, or business letter (placing orders, booking/cancellation, enquiries) (10 marks).

Unit 3 — Grammar (25 marks): ten MCQs and five very short answer questions on narration, synthesis, transformation, syntax, idioms and phrasal verbs, synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution, and homophones (20 marks combined); translation of 7-8 sentences from Hindi to English (5 marks).

Remedial teaching (not counted toward final result)

Four unit tests are held at the school level as part of remedial teaching, but marks from these are not included in the final result: two MCQ-based tests (July, November) and two descriptive-question tests (August, December), each worth 20 marks.
